From a couple years Laptops have largely focused on great display , big screens , high performance , battery life and trackpads .
All of these laptops share a common thing in them which is they have same basic design in a sense they all have a big single screen , a keyboard and a track pad.
But recently Intel showed prototype of their first ever dual screen gaming laptop . Hp and Asus also launched their dual screen laptops opening a portal to a new era of dual screen laptops
You all must be arguing that we have seen this concept in MacBook pro which uses touch bar for simple navigation or that in Asus or Razer which uses smartphones as a track pad .
But trust me this concept is far beyond them and far more useful then the touch bar used MacBook pro or laptops with smartphones as trackpads.
Imagine these laptops as MacBook pro with a stretched touch bar down to occupy nearly half the space where the keyboard resides
Computex which is one of the largest computer technology trade show in which a lot of Pc manufacturers shows their wired concept of laptops . This time Hp lead the way ahead of computex by announcing a dual screen foldable laptop . Hp named this laptop as omen x 2s which can let you play games and watch twitch side by side on 6 inch secondary display above the keyboard.
Hp omen X 2S
As mentioned above this laptop has a 6 inch 1080p secondary display above the keyboard which is designed to be used with a real-time screen mirroring feature that can cut and magnify parts of the main display (like maps) and let you zoom into them while gaming. You can also use the display to chat to friends on Discord, stream tutorial videos from YouTube, or simply keep an eye on CPU and GPU performance.
- Main display of 15 inch 1080p panel
- A 144Hz refresh rate or the option to upgrade to a 240Hz model or even a 4K HDR version.
- Intel core i9-8 core processor
- 32 gb Ram
- Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 2080 Max-Q GPU
The Omen X 2S is 22mm thin with a full metal chassis, but HP isn’t revealing weight or battery life just yet. The Omen X 2S will be available in June starting at $2,099.99Apart from HP, Asus also launched its first dual screen laptop Zenbook pro duo with two 4k displays .
Asus Zenbook pro duo
Talking about the Asus Zenbook pro duo it has two 4k displays. There’s a 15-inch 16:9 OLED panel where you’d normally find the display on a laptop, then a 32:9 IPS “ScreenPad Plus” screen directly above the keyboard that’s the same width and half the height.
Asus has built some software for the ScreenPad Plus that makes it more of a secondary control panel, but you can also use it as a full-on monitor, or even two if you want to split it into two smaller 16:9 1080p windows. You can also set it to work as an extension of the main screen, so websites rise up from above your keyboard as you scroll down.
The Asus Zenbook pro duo has 8 core Intel i9 processor with an Nvidia RTX 2060 GPU. There are four far-field microphones designed for use with Alexa and Cortana, and there’s an Echo-style blue light at the bottom edge that activates with voice commands. It has a Thunderbolt 3 port, two USB-A ports, a headphone jack, and a full-sized HDMI port. processor.
From HP to Asus all shared their wacky designs but the wildest design was of Intel dual-screen laptop prototype called as “honeycomb glacier” an idea of future gaming laptops which combines a 15.6-inch main display and a 12.3-inch secondary display into a single laptop with a unique double-hinge. Thanks to the mechanical one way roller the secondary display in this laptop could be adjusted to no of variable angles.
Intel Honeycomb glacier has a differentiating factor from both hp and Asus dual screen laptops which is the display in honeycomb glacier lifts both its screens up into the air using double hinge.
This prototype is only rocking a 45-watt 8-core Intel CPU and Nvidia GeForce 1060 graphics right now because that’s what Intel had lying around, even those chips are currently overclocked to 60 watts and 95 watts respectively.
This laptop has Tobii eye tracking system as the secondary screen is near eye level which lets you to instantly flick your focus to the secondary display so you can theoretically engage your Twitch audience without alt-tabbing away from your game.
Lastly, Intel also showed its “Twin River” laptop prototype which is more like dual-screen tablets, two tablets arranged side by side Each of its panels measures 12.3 inches diagonally, the same as Microsoft’s Surface Pro. To give the prototype a journal-like feel, they’re held together by a fabric cover made of a polyester /polyamide/lycra blend.
Intel did its best to make sure the Twin River’s weight was evenly distributed between the two sides. Each one contains a 30 WHr battery. Twin River is supported by a 15-watt, quad-core Intel Whiskey Lake U-series chip and a vapor chamber keep the temperature under control without a fan. When the device is set up like a laptop, a full keyboard and a trackpad area can be displayed on the lower screen.
IN A NUTSHELL
As these new designs are the staring of a new era of dual screen laptops, but to get their maximum utilization a great software is must make them pretty effective and useful. These secondary displays are nothing without great software and pc manufacturers have to mainly depend on Microsoft to get Windows to adapt to these new form factors.
Microsoft is preparing for this new hardware and has started is work on new lightweight windows for dual screen services. Codenamed windows lite. Windows lite interface is much like Windows as it exists today, but it will be more of a blend of what Microsoft uses with its Surface Hub shell and the simplicity of its Windows Phone Continuum user interface.
